Which chain length is right for me? 40, 45 or 50 cm compared

The length of a chain determines whether a gold necklace looks like it was made for you — or like a piece you never wear. There are only ten centimeters between 40 and 50 cm, but visually, it's a world of difference. This guide shows you where each length sits, how to determine your size yourself in a minute, and which chain length goes with which neckline.

The short answer

40 cm sits close to the neck and looks delicate and modern. 45 cm falls just below the collarbone and is the most common length for women in Germany — it suits almost every neckline. 50 cm reaches to the upper décolleté and is particularly suitable for necklaces with pendants and for layering. When in doubt, 45 cm is the safest choice.

Chain lengths at a glance

Length Where it sits Effect Ideal for
38–40 cm Right at the base of the neck Delicate, modern, emphasizes the neck Fine chains without pendants, turtlenecks
42–45 cm Just below the collarbone Classic and suitable for everyday wear Almost every neckline, every physique
50 cm Upper décolleté Calm, elegant, gives the pendant space Necklaces with pendants, V-necklines
55–60 cm At chest level Elongated, flattering Layering, blouses, blazers

These figures refer to an average neck circumference of about 33 to 36 cm. If you have a thicker neck, you should go one size up: then a 45 cm chain will sit where a 40 cm chain would sit on a more petite frame.

Measure your chain length yourself in one minute

You don't need a measuring tape from your sewing kit. A shoelace, a charging cable, or a piece of string is enough.

  1. Place the string loosely around your neck — exactly where you want the chain to sit later.
  2. Mark the point where the ends meet with your fingers or a pen.
  3. Lay the string flat and measure the length with a ruler.
  4. The result is your desired chain length. Round up to the next available size, never down.

Rule of thumb: Neck circumference plus 5 cm results in a close-fitting chain. Neck circumference plus 10 cm results in the classic fit below the collarbone.

Which chain length suits which neckline?

Neckline Recommended length Why
Round neck 40 cm The chain remains visible above the fabric
V-neck 45–50 cm The chain follows the line of the neckline
Turtleneck 40 cm or 55 cm Either right at the collar or clearly below it
Blouse, shirt 45 cm Sits exactly in the neckline when the collar is open
Strapless, bandeau 40–45 cm Short lengths emphasize shoulders and collarbone
"You don't notice the right length. You notice the wrong one every day."

Pendants change the math

A pendant hangs at the lowest point of the chain and extends the visual effect by its own height. With an 8 mm pendant, this is barely noticeable. With a larger motif, such as a heart or a coin, the chain quickly sits one to two centimeters lower than the number would suggest.

That is why many customers choose one size longer for necklaces with pendants than they would for a simple link chain. If you already have a favorite chain, you can also choose just the pendant without a chain and wear it on your existing length.

Layering: combining multiple lengths

With layering, two or three chains are worn on top of each other. To ensure they don't tangle and each remains visible, the distance between the lengths should be at least five centimeters.

The most harmonious arrangement is 40 – 45 – 50 cm. Wear the finest chain on top and the most eye-catching one at the bottom. Stick to one gold color: with consistent 18k yellow gold, the combination looks calm rather than random.

One pendant is enough. Two pendants on two chains compete with each other — the third chain is best left simple.

Why every PAEEZE chain is available in multiple lengths

A chain made of solid 18k gold is not a seasonal item. It is worn for years — and then the length must be right, not just approximately suitable. That is why we offer our necklaces in 40, 45 and 50 cm, crafted in the same workshops in Northern Italy.

If you are unsure between two sizes, we are happy to advise you personally, daily from 9 am to 7 pm. And if the length doesn't fit after all: you have a 14-day return policy.

Frequently asked questions about chain length

Which chain length is most common for women?

45 cm is the most popular length for women's necklaces in Germany. It falls just below the collarbone and fits almost every neckline and physique.

How do I measure my chain length without a measuring tape?

Place a string or a charging cable loosely around your neck, mark the point where the ends meet, and then measure the distance flat with a ruler.

Is 40 or 45 cm better for a necklace with a pendant?

For a necklace with a pendant, 45 cm is generally recommended. The pendant hangs at the lowest point and extends the visual effect, which is why 40 cm can quickly feel too tight with a pendant.

Which chain length goes with a V-neck?

For a V-neck, 45 to 50 cm look most harmonious because the chain follows the line of the neckline rather than crossing it.

Can the length of a gold chain be changed later?

For solid gold chains, this is fundamentally possible: a goldsmith can remove or add links. Since this requires soldering, however, it is easier and cheaper to choose the right length from the start.

Which chain length is suitable as a gift?

If you don't know the preferred length of the recipient, 45 cm is the safest choice. It is the most common length and can be worn for any occasion.
